He and James have great chemistry in the mine scene at the beginning of the movie. I've always liked John Hostetter's voice acting and he's well suited to Pazu's gruff, tough boss. He brings a lot of zest to the part and has great comic timing, especially his 'I thought you said you had a stomach ache!' Mallow is just lame and embarrassing by comparison. Mandy Patinkin is much more fun and entertaining to listen to. Dave Mallow in particular sounds much too goofy for this guy. But I will say this: the performances of the pirates are hokey and ridiculously cartoonish, with no actual energy to their performances. Technically, this character should be Louie because that's who the character is. Mike Reynolds is OK, but his delivery sounds very choppy and stilted, and so for that reason, Jim wins over him by far. Only minor little complaint is that he sounds a bit too much like Pete and/or Razoul, but that's hardly detrimental. The General is the only voice in the Streamline dub that doesn't sound TOO horrible that is to say, I could imagine him having a gravely voice like Mike Reynolds gives him, but having said that I gotta give it to Jim Cummings he's just more fun to listen to, and playing characters of this type is something he plays well, for better or worse. But warts and all, I'll take his performance over hers any day.

Now James WAS an eccentric casting choice for the part, yes. Furthermore, Barbara may be a skillful actress, but her voice for Pazu is neither convincing nor natural, and her acting, more detrimentally, is disappointingly wooden. Yes, James makes Pazu sound more like a teen, but he succeeds in bringing something to the role that Barbara does not: genuine life and enthusiasm. Ironically, I found the opposite to be true. The harshest detractors of Disney's dub will tell you that Pazu's Streamline VA easily surpasses James. Bottom-line, neither are ideal choices to play Sheeta, but IMO, Anna just edges her out Cody just sounds uninspired. Her delivery is very all over the place, and again, isn't particularly well directed.

While Anna Paquin may not have been the best performance in the Laputa dub in terms of missing a line or two, Lara Cody, while more 'younger-sounding' (but not convincingly so), actually fares weaker. Simply put, Mark Hamill is the better Muska by far. He's just awful, painfully stilted and robotic. WIth all apologies to the late Jeff Winkless, he simply sounded like he was sleepwalking his way through the role with zero emotion or menace. Trust me, this guy is the reason that Disney's version kicks the heck out of the Streamline dub. The only way you can hear clips of the Streamline dub is on.
